What is the softest mattress (or topper) available?

I came across this site http://www.whatsthebest-mattress.com because - once again, I woke this morning with so much pain that I feel like going back to sleep and not waking up - it sucks! My pain this morning was so great that I was sweating and shivering. I am hoping some day that a Doctor will come up with some cure or at least a medication that really works! (and it is definitely NOT Lyrica!!!)

I am looking for a mattress that is soft not just on top or a soft topper but soft down deep - seems impossible but something soft but that has some support - i don't necessarily want to fall in and sink to the bottom but I would like to feel it very soft and pillowy. In my mind I think it would feel really nice to have some kind of mattress top that is filled with warm gel that you would gently sink into and that cradle you and not put any pressure on your body at all. Well, I can dream - right?? I wish someone would invent something like this for all of us who suffer with Fibromyalgia - I hope and pray this would happen for all who suffer with this - "condition" or "disease" - they can call it whatever they want - it doesn't really matter - what matters is that they find a cure.

  1. Hey,
I've been researching this topic myself and thought of contributing by putting up a website on this same topic.
I'm sure you'd find it useful.
I welcome your suggestions on how I could improve the site.
    Thanks

  2. I have suffered with Fibro Myalgia since 1999. I finally purchased a tempurpedic memory foam mattress. Its 11" thick king size. I all talked my best friend into purchasing one last year. However Sue just learned that she has Fibro as well. I love this mattress and I have had it for 4 yrs so far. I strongly suggest you purchase this type of mattress. No springs and no lumps in the bed causing more pain. It wont take your pain away but it certainly will give you a better nights sleep without tossing and turning. It doesn't aggravate your Fibro more like other mattresses do. I have also started a support group recently to speak with friends and other people who suffer from it. Most times we have osteoarthritis and other muscle and bone related pain. The reason for the group is when your feeling alone and your loved ones are tired of hearing about your pain, you will have someone who can understand it and relate to your problem without criticism. I hope to also add resources while we communicate that may be helpful to us all. Its on facebook and a new group. Look for my fibro myalgia hurts. Hope to see you there. Virtual hugs to all Fibro Myalgia sufferers as we know all to well it hurts to even get a hug sometimes.

  4. I've suffered from Fibromyalgia since at least 1965. I can't sleep in a bed because as soon as I get into bed I feel the pain, usually in my thighs. I'm a side sleeper and when I have to sleep in a bed I either fill the bed with pillows or sleep on my back. I end up tossing out the pillows, sleeping on my back or in a chair.
Currently I have a Spring Air double pillow mattress, on top of which I have a knock off memory foam topper, then on top of that I have a feather bed made of synthetic fiber fill. None relieve the pain caused by lying on my side.

What I need is something equivalent to a triple or quadruple synthetic foam duvet or something like that. I want to feel as though I'm sleeping on a cloud that doesn't really touch my body.
Why can't they invent something like this?

  5. There is NOTHING softer than a waterbed! And there are softside mattresses that can be be used in regular beds, though you need a support frame. When my mom had cancer, it was the only place she was comfortable. Check them out!

  6. I don't suffer from fibromyalgia, but after shopping for a mattress for over a year, I am convinced there is no such thing as a soft mattress! I have tried latex (ILDs at 24 and 14--about the softest you can get), memory foam, individually wrapped coil mattress...NOTHING stops my hip pain and back stiffness. I KNOW the pain is coming from the mattresses I tried because about an hour after getting out of bed, the pain goes away.

Seems manufacturers discriminate against us slim, lighter-weight folks and those with arthristis or fibromyalgia. Not everyone can tolerate these hard-as-a-board mattresses. Don't buy into the latex scam, either; I just purchased a $3300 Savvy Rest in all talalay wtih the softest ILD available, and that thing is a torture chamber it is so hard.

I have decided to buy a 5" featherbed topper to see if that will help at all. I will report back and let you know once I get it. (This is another pet peeve: you can't actually go into a store such as JCP, Kohl's, Target, Macy's, etc and buy a featherbed topper; they're all "Online order only." Great. So now I have to be in tortuous pain for another week while I wait for it to arrive. Argh!

It's not easy. I can't even imagine the pain that someone with firbromyalgia must feel from these hard mattresses! As I said, I don't even have fibro, and I am in constant pain from these so-called-by-the-salespeople "soft" mattresses.

Good luck to all of us who are in search of a soft, cushy mattress .

    1. It seems that if you don't weigh much you can't hurt???? The only thing I have found that doesn't hurt is the bag of water in a box type of bed with no baffles. Unfortuneately I have a King consisting of 2 twin XL L&P wall hugger bases. I love the electric bed now all I need is a waterbed mattress I can use with it.
I looked online in Europe for a real feather tick. I think I can get one for about $6000.00. After looking at the prices for a twin xl mattress it may not be such a bad choice.
I hope you have found some relief.

  7. Was your back pain a mattress-related case? I’m familiar with Fibromyalgia and its supposed-unknown cause. Most believed it’s psychological, though there are some physical conditions that can trigger it. Anyway, whatever your condition is, I hope having a soft comfy mattress helped you ease the pain. 1. Actually researchers now believe that 80% of people who suffer from Fibromyalgia actually have Lyme disease. There is now a reliable blood test verified by DNA must be ordered by MD from Lab called Advanced Lab Services. This is not psychological and it is very hard to get rid of if you don't catch it right away. I emailed the author of this site with details if you're interested. Happy bed hunting!

  21. Waterbed. They have many types...some are waveless, some you can feel a little movement. But the are adjustable, just add or subtrack water. Some have very plush top too but I have added an extra topper to mine. I do not have fibromyalgia, my daughter does and this is the only type of bed she sleeps on. When I got cancer I needed soft and cool...memory foam was too hot. I know it seems nutty but ask friends and family if you could try out thier beds, even for a long nap. It would give you some idea of how different beds feel...I realize the original qu was years ago but I saw such a difference in my dd sleep when she got her waterbed I just had to suggest it as others did!

  32. I also am looking for a softer mattress for pain reasons & have asked many sites for info about how much a 120# person would sink into a soft talalay 6"slab? latex mattress factory on line has the cheapest slabs I can find. A waterbed probably is best but with the leak problem that happens & not finding clear info on waveless choices I hope to go w/latex. I can't afford to keep trying products that are just too hard. There is a waterbed that has an air frame whch is interesting & may try to get more info on that. I can see many lighter people are needing info but it's kind of a deadend. I say the softest latex one can find but remember with a cover it can make it more firm. You can wrap it in a material such as cotton. If I buy this slab I will post my review.

  33. Isn't it sad that we just cannot get a soft bed? I have used waterbeds for years and never had a leak. I even had one for my dogs and they were big dogs. 115lbs and 85lbs. I think I am just going to go the waterbed way. Good luck to you.

  34. I’ve had Fibromyalgia for 20 years. I bought three beds before I found THE ONE! I always said “Please, I need a bed that does not touch me back. I lay on it, but it can’t push back on me or I will scream from pain!” The first thing you need is an electric bed that has the foot and head which move to any configuration. Keeping the feet higher than my head helps with my Jimmy legs.
    THE ONE:
You also need a SLEEP NUMBER MATTRESS so you can find what level works for you. I have it on the softest level. If my back goes out, I need to go a little higher. You are sleeping on little lovely air pods. PODS FILLED WITH AIR! AHHHHHH it’s THE ONE! I’ll never buy any other mattress again. You can also get a queen or king mattress with each having it’s own controls. This way, your bed mate can be on 40 while you are on 10 9r a 0 like me. Please run out and get it now. Sell your house, your car, whatever you have to (except your kids or pets) so you can get the best sleep of your life. I love my bed so much. I ❤️ my Sleep Number bed!!
